Continuing from our previous post, this blog aims to speak about the lesser-known facts about the Queen of Spices.

  1. Cardamom is considered one of the most expensive spices in the world, coming behind saffron and vanilla.
  2. The cardamom plant is a member of the Ginger family. It grows to about 5m in height and has small pods in the shape of its flowers.
  3. After India, Guatemala is considered the largest producer of this spice.

When my daughter was maybe a year old, I introduced her to Cardamoms. Smitten by the aromatic flavor, my little one was immediately obsessed with its lovely floral scent and the seeds in the pod.

This is an ancient spice !!!

Cardamoms are not only known for their flavors but also their medicinal benefits. Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicines, mentions the use of cardamoms because of their medicinal and healing benefits. Some of the benefits of having cardamoms in the diet include:

  1. It is good for coughs and allergies.
  2. It provides anti-microbial protection against infections in the mouth, teeth, etc
  3. Helps to relieve stomach pains, nausea, and bloating.
  4. It is an effective appetite booster.
  5. Helps in detoxifying.
  6. Helps in thinning mucous and helps in clearing the lungs.

If you want to introduce cardamoms to your children, then some of the easiest ways are as below.

  1. Boil two pods of cardamom in the milk, and then strain it. Let it cool a bit, and then give that warm flavorful milk to your child.
  2. Another way is to add cardamoms to your favorite puddings, which not only adds to the flavor but the aroma too is mesmerizing.
  3. One can also create a little easy-to-make fruit pudding by grinding finely chopped pear with 1 pod of cardamom and ¼ cup of water. Depending on how thick or thin you require this easy to make pudding, you can add some of the water and blend them.
  4. One can also use cardamoms in purees such as in cereal mixed with yogurt or other fruits and veggies. If you are adding veggies, pressure cook the veggies with cardamoms, blend them and then serve to your child.
  5. One can also have cardamom-infused tea or any warm drink, which is perfect throughout the year.

After having experienced the benefits of cardamoms in my diet, in my opinion, a cardamom is indeed a form of nature’s medicine. Cardamoms can be consumed at any time and throughout the year. And thanks to social media and the awareness, it’s so good to see that this Queen of Spices is available in most households around the globe.
